Barrhead County council is continuing a public hearing at 1 p.m. on April 7 concerning a land use bylaw amendment that would add “Data Processing Facility” as a discretionary use to the Agricultural Land Use District.
A public hearing on the matter was initially held on Feb. 3 but was recessed until this month.

Axiom Oil and Gas Inc. has proposed a modular power generation and data processing facility near an existing gas plant. According to the company’s letter to the country, the project is designed to utilize stranded natural gas to generate up to six megawatts of off-grid electricity. This power will then be used for a modular data processing facility, including blockchain (Bitcoin) mining.
By amending the bylaw to allow these facilities with discretion, the company can apply for a development permit, which the development authority would then have final say on approving and/or adding requirements to.
Any person claiming to be affected by the bylaw may provide a written or verbal presentation at the hearing. The county notes, however, that those who spoke at the Feb. 3 hearing will not be able to speak again on April 7.
The meeting will take place in the County of Barrhead office and via Zoom.
