A six-year prison term has been given to a man charged in a fatal stabbing on the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation last year.
Dalton Earl Cardinal, 35, was sentenced in Alexis Court of Justice on March 25, 2026, and was also given a lifetime firearms ban after being convicted on one count of manslaughter.
It was on Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, when Mayerthorpe RCMP received a report of a stabbing at a residence on Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation. Upon arrival, Mounties say they found the victim, 28-year-old Elzeare Cardinal, deceased.
The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes unit was deployed to take over the investigation and with the help of the Mayerthorpe RCMP detachment, Parkland Police Dog Services, and Edson Forensic Identification Section, officers were able to arrest a suspect later that day. Dalton Cardinal was originally charged with second-degree murder.
