Applications for residential fire pit permits in Whitecourt are free for one year beginning April 1.
Whitecourt town council approved the Residential Fire Pit Permit Incentive Program at the end of February. Starting this Wednesday, individuals can apply for a free fire pit permit until March 31, 2027.
In March 2025, the town adopted new legislation to regulate residential fire pits and fire permits, which requires an individual to apply for a fire pit permit, rather than issuing one to a property.
The town says the change was made to improve fire prevention and fire safety by ensuring pits are placed safely and responsible burning practices are followed. The incentive program is intended to encourage compliance with that change.
Those who applied for permits before April 1 will receive a refund for the application fee, the town says.
