Yellowhead County council has identified crime reduction, traffic control and community relations as local policing priorities for the next year.
Earlier this month, council received policing reports from the Edson and Evansburg RCMP detachments, which both serve the region, and communicated the local priorities it would like them to focus on.
Edson
Data collected from January to December 2025 indicates that total property crime decreased by 31 per cent last year, from 561 incidents in 2024 to 388.
There were 50 break-ins reported, down from 97 in 2024; 81 reports of theft under $5,000, down from 131; and only 53 cases of mischief-related property damage, down from 113. On the other hand, motor vehicle thefts increased to 53 incidents from 32 in 2024, and reports of fraud rose to 38 incidents from 23.
Compared to 2021, overall property crime decreased by three per cent.
Meanwhile, persons crime remained relatively stable, increasing by three per cent in 2025, to 105 incidents from 102. Since 2021, however, it’s jumped by 40 per cent.
In 2025, sexual assaults decreased to two reported incidents, down from eight in 2024. There were also four fewer assaults recorded, with 46. Incidents of criminal harassment did increase to 29 reports, up from 17.
According to the report, when all criminal code offences are considered together, crime decreased by 21 per cent from January to December last year compared to 2024.
Evansburg
The Evansburg RCMP reports that total criminal code offences decreased by 49 per cent in the first three quarters of 2025 compared to 2024.
Specifically, there were 10 fewer persons crimes and two fewer motor vehicle thefts. Property crime also reportedly decreased by 22 per cent.
For 2025, the detachment had a goal to complete 600 visibility patrols. By the end of Q3, which runs October to December, it had done 438 and was on track to surpass that goal.
It also aimed to do 60 compliance checks on prolific offenders and has completed 51. The detachment is also on track to exceed this goal.
