The Town of Edson has an updated Community Wildfire Mitigation Strategy and is applying for grant funding to support vegetation management.
Edson town council approved the updated Community Wildfire Mitigation Strategy during its regularly scheduled meeting on March 3.
The document guides wildfire risk reduction efforts in and around the community and was first developed in 2015. In 2024, the town secured funding through the Wawanesa Community Wildfire Prevention Grant to support the upgrade project, which officials say was needed due to evolving environmental conditions and community growth.
Several community engagement opportunities took place over the course of its development, including a questionnaire that received 148 responses.
Key recommendations in the strategy include:
- Continue existing FireSmart activities and plans within the community.
- Develop plans to expand FireSmart activities to municipal lands identified by the ignition exposure model.
- Work with energy companies to secure the south fire access road, south of Edson.
- Design a scope of work to restore the bridge across Moose Creek.
- Expand the fire access road to the west and east to ensure continuity and egress for fire suppression efforts.
- Plan and develop a 200 metre fireguard adjacent to the fire access road south of Edson.
- Collaborate with both West Fraser and Weyerhaeuser for fire-break funding.
- Continue to search for FireSmart funding opportunities for the community.
In the same meeting, council directed administration to apply for the 2026 Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) Fireguard Grant to support vegetation management and reduce wildfire risk.
The town says that over the last few years, vegetation regrowth and downed trees have begun to accumulate, creating hazards in some areas. Ongoing vegetation management is needed to maintain safety and reduce wildfire risk. An area south of Edson has been identified as critical for these protective measures.
