The Alberta First Responders Radio Communications System (AFRRCS) has been implemented across the emergency response departments in the Town of Edson.
The town says it is now fully transitioned to AFRRCS, with all portable and mobile radios acquired, programmed, installed and operational across Fire Services, Enforcement Services and the Emergency Coordination Centre.
The new system has already improved clarity, reliability and coverage for frontline responders, town officials report.
“Reliable communication is essential for the protection of our community and our responders,” says Mayor Kevin Zahara.
Another benefit of AFRRCS is the interoperability it provides with neighbouring and regional partners, including:
- Yellowhead County
- Woodlands County
- Hinton
- Jasper
- Stony Plain
- Whitecourt
- Provincial partners such as Alberta Wildfire, AEMA and STARS
A $45,000 contribution from Cenovus supported the purchase of new radios and associated equipment for the upgrades.
“Cenovus’s support helped ensure this project was completed to the highest standard, giving our emergency teams the tools they need to stay safe and connected,” Zahara comments. “We are very grateful for their investment in public safety here in Edson, and we’re thrilled that a local company was the successful bidder on this project as well.”
The upgrades were completed in mid-February.
