Whitecourt’s newest event facility, which is currently under construction, will be named the Canfor Culture and Events Centre, the town and Canadian Forest Products Ltd. recently announced.
Construction of the facility began in the summer of 2024, and it is expected to open this fall. It will include an arts, culture, and convention centre (theatre), a library, and a town administration office.
“This is an exciting milestone for the facility, and I’m pleased to be part of the announcement,” said Whitecourt Mayor Ray Hilts. “Canfor has a significant presence in our community, and this investment demonstrates their commitment to our region and projects that strengthen community connection and growth.”
The theatre portion of the space is intended to allow residents of all ages to develop their skills and talents in the performing arts while increasing the community’s capacity to host social and cultural events. At the same time, the library will provide opportunities for connection and learning.
Bookings are reportedly already being made, and the first major event will take place in October; details are expected to be announced soon.
“Located in the heart of downtown Whitecourt, the Canfor Culture and Events Centre will serve our region and offer spaces to host conferences, trade shows, events, concerts, festivals and ceremonies,” added Hilts. “The new facility will increase service and program opportunities to those living in our community, provide space for people of all ages to gather, stimulate downtown vitalization and help to grow Whitecourt as a tourist destination.”
Brigette Moore, treasurer of the Pumpjack Players, said the facility’s latest theatre technology will broaden what kind of productions the group can achieve, while supporting the growing number of youth interested in the performing arts.
