Yellowhead County council met recently to award a renovation contract for the new Peers Fire Station and receive an update on the Evansburg Community Hall’s operations.
The Peers Fire Station building was purchased by Yellowhead County in 2025 and requires renovations to be used for its intended purposes.
Renovations are expected to include:
- Adding two bay doors to the north side of the building, for a total of three.
- Installing a concrete ramp to the bay door exits.
- Bringing the bay area up to code.
- Redesigning the front entrance to be used for training and meetings, with access to the bay area.
- Grading the front entrance to limit water pooling.
- Renovating washrooms and adding showers.
- Installing a kitchen and direct vent exhaust.
- Demolishing old structures on the property.
After receiving seven tender bid submissions for the work outlined above, council awarded the renovation contract to Vantage Builders for $1,845,050. The county says this was the lowest submitted bid that met all the bid requirements.
Council also received an update on the Evansburg Community Hall’s operations.
At the end of January, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #196 Evansburg informed the county that it would no longer like to hold or operate the community hall beginning in 2029, or earlier, if a new proposed community hall is completed, but only under the following conditions:
- The Legion is able to purchase or acquire Heritage House.
- Heritage House Seniors Society and Lobstick Literacy are able to move into the new community hall at a reasonable rental rate, consistent with their submitted request.
- Yellowhead County continues subsidizing the current hall until the new community hall is complete.
The Legion states that this change could reduce overhead costs and allow it to contribute an estimated $20,000 directly to veteran and community supports.
