The Whitecourt Wolverines won two road games over the weekend.
Saturday, Jan. 31, they won 5-3 against the Canmore Eagles.
Canmore secured a 1-0 lead in the first period, which Quentin Bourne tied that up with a powerplay goal at 1:05 into period two. Jalen Bianchet and Kyle Tucker assisted.
In the second frame, Brendan Ruskowski scored at 6:09, and Jalen Bianchet kept the momentum going with another goal 23 seconds later for a 3-1 lead. Tristan Slywka, then Xander Schulte and Cole Barrett got the helpers.
The Eagles tied it 3-3 by the end of the frame with two more goals, but Whitecourt scored a powerplay goal and an empty-netter in period three for the 5-3 win.
Brendan Ruskowski and Jalen Bianchet assisted Kyle Tucker with the powerplay marker at 14:53, and Ruskowski’s empty-netter was aided by Tyler Pretty and Mason Russell at 19:05.
On Sunday, the Wolverines triumphed 4-1 over the Calgary Canucks.
The Canucks finished period one with a 1-0 lead.
Cole Barrett netted the Wolverines’ first goal of the game and tied it 1-1 in period two, assisted by Jalen Bianchet.
In the third frame, Whitecourt’s Nathan Hawkins and Calgary’s Simon Bowland dropped the gloves at 2:56, earning fighting and game misconduct majors. Canuck Riley Bracko was also served a 10-minute misconduct penalty.
Brendan Ruskowski scored on the resulting powerplay, putting Whitecourt ahead 2-1. Quentin Bourne and Kyle Tucker got the helpers.
Cole Barrett then scored unassisted at 15:33, and Tyler Pretty scored an unassisted empty-netter at 19:10, securing the 4-1 win for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines still lead the AJHL North Division, now with a record of 30-10-0-1.
