The Town of Edson’s Community Engagement Action Team (CEAT) was recently awarded $105,613 through the Government of Alberta’s Community Facility Enhancement Program to support the redevelopment of the Westhaven Rink.
In addition to the provincial grant, the project is supported by a variety of community partnerships and donations, including:
- In-kind donations from KSM Construction, WSP, Johnson and Herbert and Jade Oilfield Maintenance
- $40,000 in seed funding from Healthier Together
- $20,000 from the Youth Interagency fundraising reserve
- $20,000 from the Eddie’s Big Run Committee’s fundraising reserves
The town is also contributing $20,000 from the 2026 Capital Projects Budget.
The Westhaven Rink Project will include installing new full-height rink boards, puck containment at both ends, and a multisport court to encourage year-round use.
The action team hopes to have the improvements in place for the 2026-27 winter season and will be connecting with neighbourhood residents to gather input on potential summer uses.
In 2024, CEAT’s Healthier Together Committee identified youth engagement and social connection as key priorities for building a healthier community. Sometime after, a community member expressed interest in upgrading the rink, which the committee found to be in line with its vision, as the project will enhance a well-loved neighbourhood asset while supporting youth involvement.
