With winter temperatures fluctuating frequently, Whitecourt RCMP are gearing up to launch Operation Cold Start, an initiative aimed at reducing idling vehicle theft.
The annual campaign focuses on preventing crimes of opportunity stemming from running, unlocked and unattended vehicles.
The operation is scheduled for Feb. 1-7, during which time officers will perform enforcement and education efforts to help keep vehicles safe. They will be checking idling vehicles to ensure keys are not left inside and vehicles are properly secured.
The RCMP reminds residents that vehicle theft can happen anywhere, in every neighborhood and at any time. Officials say leaving a car unattended, even for a short period, can put personal belongings and passengers at risk, such as pets or children.
Officers also recommend reading up on the safety features of your car. Different makes and models have different locking, alarm and remote start systems.
The Whitecourt RCMP also offers the following tips to help residents keep their vehicles and belongings safe:
- Never leave your vehicle unattended with the keys inside.
- Always lock your vehicle, even when parked in a driveway or garage.
- Remove valuables from sight. Items left in plain view, from purses and wallets to electronics, make your car a target.
- Park in a visible, well-lit area whenever possible to deter opportunistic theft.
- Know your car’s security capabilities and limitations to better secure it.
- Consider using visible anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks or other deterrents.
- If warming up your vehicle is necessary, stay with it. Modern vehicles rarely require extended warm-up periods.
- Educate young or new drivers. Safe vehicle practices should be prioritized from the very beginning of their driving experience.
