Like many municipalities, 2025 was rife with unprecedented infrastructure challenges for the Town of Barrhead, and that focus is likely to continue into 2026.
With provincial funding tightening and infrastructure needs growing, Barrhead Mayor Ty Assaf said the town is lobbying for better financial support while exploring sustainable but cost-effective ways to keep infrastructure aligned with provincial and federal standards.
The town will continue to focus on core services in 2026, including keeping roads, utilities and equipment operating well, as these factors are the “backbone” of daily life, Assaf said.
Key road rehabilitation and overlays are planned, along with culvert repairs and maintenance to critical public works equipment. The town is also seeking funding to support wastewater lagoon upgrades.
“We’re constantly looking at replacing those,” commented Assaf. “These are the things that the residents may not always see, but they absolutely feel when they are not done.”
Barrhead’s town council recently approved the 2026 Capital Budget at $4.8 million, with $979,790 being contributed from the operating budget. It also allocates about $1 million in additional contributions to reserves for future projects. About $1.22 million was taken from the original proposed total, as multiple projects were postponed until studies are complete, or saw their project scope reduced.

As we head into the new year, Assaf encourages town residents to familiarize themselves with the budget and how their tax dollars are spent, and to reach out with any questions.
Otherwise, residents can look forward to the town’s continuing efforts to enhance community events and prioritize the elements that make Barrhead shine.
“Our community is very special,” Assaf said. “We’ve worked harder to enhance and showcase all the experiences our town makes, all the experiences that make it such a special place to live and visit.”
