Student enrolment in the Grande Yellowhead Public School Division (GYPSD) is down about 1.5 per cent in 2025-26 compared to last year, according to the division.
During its November meeting, the GYPSD Board of Trustees discussed current enrolment numbers and their resulting financial implications.
About 4,432 students are enrolled this year, just under 100 fewer than last year.
Alvin Kuzyk, Director of Finance, said this will result in a loss of funding, but that reduction will be spread over a few years, rather than coming as one big budget hit. She said it is not a crisis situation, just unfortunate that the division’s enrolment projections were not met.
Overall, seven schools have seen increases this year while 11 have seen declines. Some declines can be attributed to larger-than-average graduating classes that left the division last year. Despite the slight drop, Kuzyk said enrolment has been relatively stable.
Kuzyk roughly estimates an impact of about $500,000 from the budget moving forward.
