Following the close of polls in the 2025 municipal election, the Town of Barrhead has completed its initial count of ballots and released unofficial results for Mayor (1) and Council (6) positions.
Town officials say the vote count took place at the Barrhead Seniors Drop-In Centre immediately after polls closed at 8:00 p.m., with results tabulated under the supervision of the Returning Officer in accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA).
The town says preliminary tallies indicate that Ty Assaf has been elected as mayor, while the following candidates have been elected as councillors to serve the Town of Barrhead for the 2025 – 2029 term.
• Dausen Kluin (867 Votes)
• Charmaine Botros (753)
• Dave Sawatzky (680)
• Don Smith (582)
• Anthony Oswald (578)
• Steve Fylyshtan (576)
The town notes, these results are based on the unofficial count and are subject to confirmation during the official results review process.
“We thank all candidates for their commitment to public service and congratulate those who have been elected to represent our community,” said Collin Steffes, Town of Barrhead CAO, in a media release. “We also extend our appreciation to election day staff and volunteers who helped ensure a fair and transparent process.”
WHY OFFICIAL ELECTION RESULTS ARE NOT IMMEDIATELY RELEASED
Under section 97 of Alberta’s Local Authorities Election Act, election results cannot be declared official until four days after Election Day. The delay ensures time for:
• Verifying ballot counts and voter registries.
• Reviewing any voting irregularities or challenges.
• Confirming eligibility and completing the official statement of results.
The town says this period allows Returning Officers to conduct a meticulous review before officially declaring the election outcome. The official results will be posted by Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, at 12:00 noon, on the town’s website and social media channels.
NEXT STEPS
Once results are confirmed, town officials say the new council will take the Oath of Office during the Organizational Meeting scheduled for Oct. 28, 2025, with their first regular meeting of council.
