The Barrhead Healthcare Centre is receiving funding from the provincial government to upgrade its medical device reprocessing department.
Medical device reprocessing (MDR) departments sterilize surgical tools to support safe and timely surgeries. The government says these departments are a key reason Alberta completed a record-breaking 318,920 surgeries last year and continues to beat the national average for wait times for procedures like hip replacements, hip fracture repairs and knee replacements.
Budget 2025 earmarked $243 million over three years for the MDR Upgrade Program to modernize these departments across the province.
The upgrade program is already underway at four facilities and last week, the Government of Alberta announced six additions to the program, including the Barrhead Healthcare Centre.
Officials say the upgrades should modernize hospital infrastructure and improve surgical efficiency.
