The Whitecourt Wolverines played two games over the weekend, but only came out on top for one.
On Friday, Oct. 3, they beat the Kodiaks 8-5 in Camrose, but fell 4-2 to the Canmore Eagles at home on Saturday.
In Camrose, Whitecourt’s Jalen Bianchet, along with Quentin Bourne and Kyle Tucker, started the action off with a power play goal while Kodiak Logan Anderson was in the box for roughing.
Mason Russell then scored for the Wolverines at 18:13, with the helpers going to Jager Gugyelka and Ty Rayan for a 2-0 lead going into the second.
In period two, Wolverine Cole Barrett kept the momentum up with a goal at 9:59. He was assisted by Parker Fitzgerald and Spencer Claerhout.
Camrose scored next at 13:24 to bring it to 3-1, but Whitecourt’s Ty Rayan helped Mason Russell net his second of the night less than one minute later. It was Russell’s fifth goal this season.
The Kodiaks scored again to finish the frame 4-2 in Whitecourt’s favour.
Jalen Bianchet started third-period action off at 1:51 with his eighth goal of the season, thanks to assistance from Tyler Pretty and Alex Symes.
Cole Barrett fired another just eight seconds later to boost Whitecourt to 6-2. He was assisted by Brendan Ruskowski and Parker Fitzgerald.
Wolverines Jager Gugyelka, Jalen Bianchet and Nathan Hawkins all took minors at various points over the next 10 minutes, giving Camrose the chance to sneak in three power play goals and narrow Whitecourt’s lead to just 6-5.
But the Wolverines Brendan Ruskowski and Alex Symes both scored empty netters at 18:47 and 19:53 to secure the 8-5 victory.
At home on Saturday, Ruskowski scored the Wolverine’s only two goals. He was assisted by Justus Chlyld and Cole Barrett at 2:59 in frame two, then by Alex Symes at 15:26 in period three.
The Eagles scored two power play goals after Whitecourt’s Jalen Bianchet went to the box for hooking and Mason Russell for tripping.
