The Whitecourt Wolverines secured victories in both their weekend games.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, they faced the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons at home and came out on top with a 6-2 win.
Kyle Tucker secured the first goal for the Wolverines at 9:32, where Tyler Pretty made his fourth assist of the season and Alex Symes made his second. Seven minutes later, Jalen Bianchet got his fourth goal of the season, with the helper going to Mason Russell.
With 1:23 left in the first period and a 2-0 lead for Whitecourt, Ryan Arnold scored one for the Oil Barons thanks to support from Griffin Gidney and Cody Nordstrom.
At 6:42 in the second frame Whitecourt’s Kyle Tucker set the tone again, scoring his second goal of the night and third of the season . Bianchet and Nathan Hawkins assisted. Otherwise, the second was quiet.
In period three, Ryan Arnold scored for Fort McMurray again, with help from Reis Nyland and Jaggar John, to narrow Whitecourt’s lead to 3-2.
But the Wolverines Cole Barret and Justus Chyld fired back for an insurance goal three minutes later, making it 4-2.
The team kept the heat up and Mason Russell notched his third goal of the season for a 5-2 lead. Tristan Slywka and Chyld got the helpers.
The Wolverines Tyler Pretty, with Brendan Ruskowski and Spencer Claerhout, netted the last marker, making it a 6-2 final score.
On Sunday, the Wolverines saw a power play goal and an empty netter contribute to their 4-1 win against the Devon Xtreme.Â
The Xtreme’s Ben Deacon, assisted by Jason Huang, scored the only goal in the first period.
The 1-0 lead lasted until 10:53 into period two, when Whitecourt’s Kyle Tucker tied it up with his fourth goal this season. Jalen Bianchet and Cole Barrett got the helpers.
About three minutes later, Spencer Claerhout scored his first goal of the season while the team was on a power play, with assistance from Parker Fitzgerald and Ty Rayan to make it 2-1.
Heading into frame three with a one-goal lead, Jalen Bianchet notched two more goals, including one empty netter, to secure Whitecourt’s 4-1 win. His fifth and sixth goals of the season were assisted by Kyle Tucker and Ty Rayan, respectively.
On Friday, Oct. 3, the Wolverines are at Encana Arena at 7 p.m. to take on the Camrose Kodiaks.
