Whitecourt residents might notice some activity on Main Street Thursday morning as the community shows up for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, an annual fundraiser for the Wellspring Family Resource and Crisis Centre.
Taking place Sept. 18, in front of Twice is Nice, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is more than a fundraiser: it’s also a chance to raise awareness of and combat gender-based and domestic violence.
Men sign up to walk the mile, which Trish Lockard, Shelter Manager, says will just be half a block in practice, in red high heels. There are over 45 people signed up this year.
Residents can head down at 11 a.m., with walkers taking off at 11:30 a.m. Activities will be going until 1 p.m., including a free barbecue and a 50/50 draw. If you aren’t walking but you’d like to contribute, you can enter the 50/50 via QR code, donate, or sponsor a walker.
The Wellspring Family Resource and Crisis Centre is a domestic violence shelter serving women and children fleeing abuse. In addition to acting as an emergency 21-day shelter, it also offers outreach to men and women in the community, a school program teaching healthy relationships, and a women’s group.
Funded for 22 beds, the organization also assists with other community resources like finding a doctor, finding housing, helping with Alberta Works and more.
