The Town of Edson has introduced a new requirement for prospective municipal election candidates ahead of the upcoming general election scheduled for October 20, 2025.
This year, anyone planning to seek election as mayor, councillor, or school board trustee must file a Notice of Intent to Run form before accepting campaign contributions or incurring any campaign-related expenses.
The new step is separate from the formal nomination process, which is still required in order to officially appear on the ballot. However, once the notice is submitted and accepted by the returning officer, a candidate’s name will be added to the public Register of Candidates on the town’s website at www.edson.ca/election2025.
Officials say the added transparency is aimed at helping the public better understand who is preparing to run and when they begin active campaigning.
The town is also reminding potential candidates that a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check must now be submitted with nomination forms—a process that can take several weeks to complete.

In the lead-up to the election, Alberta Municipalities will also host a series of workshops aimed at people considering a run for office in small- and medium-sized municipalities. Topics will include the role of municipal councils, differences from other levels of government, and the realities of public service.
