Whitecourt RCMP are warning residents of a growing trend in distraction thefts involving fake jewelry scams.
Police say these scams have been reported across the province and usually involve a suspect approaching an individual, offering to exchange jewelry for cash. Investigators say in every case reported so far, the jewelry turns out to be fake.
Investigators say the suspects may also use distraction techniques while engaging individuals in conversation to steal real jewelry, wallets and other valuables.
The RCMP have provided the following tips to help Whitecourt residents stay safe:
- Be cautious of strangers approaching you with urgent personal stories, especially if they involve money or valuables.
- Avoid engaging in jewelry or cash exchanges with people you don’t know.
- Do not allow anyone to place jewelry or other objects on you.
- Keep personal belongings close and be mindful of your surroundings.
- Walk away and seek assistance if you feel uncomfortable or pressured.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims in the community and are asking anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of this scam to contact them as soon as possible.
