Whitecourt town council has selected Silvacom Ltd. as the project manager for the upcoming Community Fireguard Project of constructing a 100-metre-wide fireguard on the east side of town.
Council put out a request for proposals (RFP) on Nov. 7, looking for qualified contractors who felt confident in their abilities to take on this major project. After the RFP closed on Nov. 18, officials say they had only received one offer of $246,420.00 plus GST from Silvacom Ltd. for the completion of this project.
Silvacom Ltd. is an Edmonton-based company that specializes in natural resource management services and has been involved in similar projects in other communities across the province.
Director of Community Safety, Lee Hardman, says Silvacom Ltd. has the expertise and knowledge required to complete this project properly and on time.
“We are confident that Silvacom is capable of performing this work,” says Hardman. “They’ve completed similar projects in the past for other municipalities and have been involved in projects for the Town of Whitecourt as well.”
As the Project Manager, Hardman says Silvacom’s responsibilities will mostly entail overseeing the daily construction work, with another RFP coming later for the actual construction of the fireguard.
Council unanimously passed the motion to award the Program Manager contract for the construction of the community fireguard to Silvacom Ltd. Funding for this project is said to be coming from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA).
