The Province of Alberta has released new economic indicators for September 2024, including lower-than-average unemployment in the Whitecourt statistical area.
The large statistical area encompassing not only Whitecourt, but Banff, Jasper, Athabasca, Drayton Valley, Peace River and Grande Prairie, showed an unemployment rate of 5.1 per cent.
Edmonton had the highest unemployment rate last month at 8.6 per cent, while Camrose-Drumheller was the lowest at 4.7 per cent.
Alberta’s unemployment rate was 7.4 per cent in September, up from 7.3 per cent in August, and 5.9 per cent in September last year.
According to Statistics Canada and other Alberta government sources:
- There were 2.5 million people employed in the province, a 3 per cent year-over-year (y/y) increase
- There were 4,555 business incorporations, a 3.7 per cent increase y/y.
- Alberta’s Q3 population was 4.9 million- a 4.4 per cent y/y increase.
- There were 156 active drilling rigs in the province, a 15.6 per cent y/y increase.
- As for inflation, the consumer price index in Alberta was 2.0 per cent in August, down from 2.7 per cent in July.
- Average weekly earnings in Alberta declined 0.2 per cent m/m to $1,333 in July. They were up 3.3 per cent y/y increase.
