A Westlock RCMP officer has been injured by an apparent trap while responding to a break-and-enter.
On Thursday, Aug. 22, Westlock RCMP say they received a report of a break-and-enter in progress at a residence. According to the report, this residence previously housed tenants who were evicted and have been repeatedly breaking back in.
Upon approaching the door, Mounties say one officer was injured after stepping on a nail surreptitiously protruding under a mat. The female suspect in the residence had also allegedly injured herself on the same nail before police arrived.
Police say two individuals were located in the residence and taken into custody, including Cody John King, 40, of Westlock, who has been charged with:
- Break and enter
- Mischief
- Two counts of set trap likely to cause bodily harm
- Assault Peace officer.
RCMP say break-and-enter charges are pending against the female Westlock resident as well, however, her name will not be available until her charges are sworn. Officials say both suspects were released from custody with court dates in the future.
Officials say the officer and suspect injured by the trap will recover from their injuries.
