Whitecourt Wolverines Head Coach, Shawn Martin, is a finalist for Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) Coach of the Year.
Martin and five other finalists were announced by the CJHL on May 6, in conjunction with the National Hockey League Coaches’ Association (NHLCA), for the Darcy Haugan/Mark Cross Memorial Award.
The award is named in honour of Humboldt Broncos (SJHL) head coach Darcy Haugan and assistant Mark Cross, who were among those killed in the tragic bus crash on April 6, 2018.
Finalists were determined through a voting process completed by the CJHL’s nine-member leagues, a release states.
This past year, Martin led the Wolverines to a first place finish in the regular season, and an appearance in the AJHL championship series.
The campaign included league-bests in wins (34), PK efficiency (83.6 per cent), goals against (152), and shutouts (7).
The other five nominees for the Darcy Haugan/Mark Cross Memorial Award are:
- Mike Reagan – Flin Flon Bombers (SJHL)
- Kyle Brick – Blind River Beavers (NOJHL)
- Mark Joslin – Brantford 99ers (OJHL)
- Marty Abrams – Navan Grads (CCHL)
- Phil Fife – Amherst Ramblers (MHL)
