The Town of Whitecourt will soon have a new Shoppers Drug Mart as council passed the third and final reading for a development permit application at their regular meeting on Monday.
The development proposal would see a Shoppers Drug Mart constructed on the vacant plot of land at 4420 52 Avenue, just north of Mike and Rebecca’s No Frills, Anytime Fitness, and the Mobile Gas Bar Kiosk. Town officials note, the 1.2 acres north of this development application will remain undeveloped at this time.
Officials with Loblaw’s say the Shoppers Drug Mart is expected to employ 30 to 40 Whitecourt residents once fully operational, with construction on the 17,000-square-foot commercial building set to begin in the summer of 2024 and be completed by the summer of 2025.
“We are really proud of our Shoppers Drug Mart offering,” says Victoria Kendrew, Senior Manager of Real Estate Development with Loblaw’s. “We feel that it brings added convenience, added new products, added healthcare services to the community and we do feel that it will have a significant positive impact.”
Kendrew also noted how cooperative Town officials were in forming the proposal.
“I’d like to really thank Town staff who have been wonderful to work with. We’ve worked together to find an application that we feel is really strong for you to review today.”
