The Whitecourt Wolverines were at the Canmore Recreation Centre on Wednesday, April 3, losing 5-4 to the Canmore Eagles in game four of their second round AJHL Playoffs series.
Owen Jones got the Eagles on the board early with a power play goal at 0:46. Logan Ziegler and Brody Mortensen were credited with the assists on Jones’ third goal of the post-season.
Zephyr LaPlante tied the game for the Wolverines at 1:45 with his first goal of the post-season, assisted by Colby Browne and Spencer Rheaume.
Owen Jones’ second goal of the game, and fourth of the post-season, was scored at 2:57. Logan Ziegler and Emanuel Hudson picked up assists on the Eagles go-ahead goal.
Ethan Look scored the last goal of the first period for the Eagles on the power play at 13:20. Look’s second goal of the post-season was assisted by Logan Ziegler and Brody Mortensen.
The Canmore Eagles outshot the Whitecourt Wolverines 16-12 in the first period and took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
Travis Verbeek started the second period with a power play goal for the Wolverines at 7:46. Matthew Ronn and Braden Keeble assisted on Verbeek’s fifth goal of the post-season.
Kaden Wiltsie tied the game for the Wolverines on a power play goal at 18:56. Wiltsie’s second goal of the post-season was assisted by Spencer Rheaume and Jalen Bianchet.
At the end of the second period, the Whitecourt Wolverines had outshot the Canmore Eagles 12-11 and tied the game 3-3 before heading into the second intermission.
Eagles forward Rhett Dekowny scored an unassisted goal at 0:36 of the third period to put the Eagles up 4-3. That was Dekowny’s fifth goal of the post-season.
Dekowny scored his second goal of the game, and sixth of the post-season at 11:22. Dekowny’s game-winning goal was assisted by Kayde Rawji and Owen Jones.
Travis Verbeek scored his second goal of the game, and sixth of the post-season, unassisted at 19:46 but time would run out before the Wolverines could tie the game.
The Canmore Eagles outshot the Whitecourt Wolverines 9-8 in the third period.
Whitecourt Wolverines goaltender Nicholas Avakyan made 31 saves on 36 shots.
Canmore Eagles goaltender Matthew Malin made 28 saves on 32 shots en route to the 5-4 victory.
With the Eagles winning, the series is now tied 2-2.
