Officials with Grande Yellowhead Public School Division (GYPSD) say École Westhaven Elementary School’s Grade 1/2 Montessori class decided that they wanted to put together their own action plan for a coffee shop!
Staff say students expressed interest in hosting a coffee shop as part of their service practical learning this term. Officials say the students created a list of things they would need to learn in order to be successful which were followed up with presentations and practical learning opportunities on the selected topics.
Staff say the student entrepreneurs learned how to:
- Make coffee, tea and hot chocolate on their own
- Take an order for a drink
- Fill out an order form
- Recognize the value of Canadian Coins
- Add sums and make change
Students also had a chance to practice their communication skills (verbal and written) throughout the process as they politely engaged with a number of adults and students in the building. Staff believe this multidisciplinary project helped students to deepen their understanding of numeracy, literacy, and practical life curriculums. GYPSD officials say the students did a wonderful job and add they thoroughly enjoyed providing yummy treats to the adults in the building.
