According to the Town of Whitecourt, local streets and sidewalks are cleared using a priority system to maximize safe travel for the greatest number of people.
Priority 1: Major arterial roads and collector roadways, to give good access to within a few blocks of most areas and allow school bus operations.
Priority 2: Downtown business district, to allow owners time in advance to clean adjacent sidewalks.
Priority 3: Residential or local roadways.
Priority 4: Industrial roads.
Officials say residents who are not sure what priority their street is can check out the map on the town of Whitecourt website.
With winter’s arrival, Town officials want to remind property owners they are responsible for clearing sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall.
Officials with the Town of Whitecourt say free sand/salt mix is available in a green bin at the Whitecourt Legion parking lot and in the JDA Place parking lot. Officials say residents need to bring shovels and buckets.
