The Alberta NDP say they are committed to keeping Albertans on the Canadian Pension Plan amid calls for the UCP to pump the brakes.
Officials with the official Opposition have announced a new set of in-person town halls across the province in 2024. They believe these town halls will continue to engage directly with Albertans who are concerned about the UCP’s plans to alter the Canada Pension Plan.
“It is alarming to see how determined they are to gamble with Albertans’ pensions, ignoring widespread opposition and expert advice. The Alberta NDP is committed to making sure that doesn’t happen. We will continue to ensure the people of this province have a real opportunity to have their voices heard,” said Sarah Hoffman, Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition.
This announcement from the NDP comes while criticism of the UCP’s handling of the pension issue remains ongoing. Despite promises of thorough engagement, the opposition says, Albertans are dissatisfied with the UCP’s lack of transparency, honesty, and inadequate consultation.
“Our online survey has received over 40,000 unique responses so far, and our in-person town halls have been packed with hundreds of people in attendance each time. The overwhelming majority of these responses oppose leaving the Canada Pension Plan,” said Kyle Kasawski, Alberta NDP Critic for Municipalities and MLA for Sherwood Park.
According to the official opposition, the upcoming town halls are part of the Alberta NDP’s ongoing effort to protect the retirement security of Albertans. Registration and details on dates and locations can be found online by visiting AlbertasFuture.ca.
“The message is clear: Albertans want the UCP to keep their hands off the CPP,” said Hoffman. She continued, “It is not too late for Danielle Smith and Nate Horner to start listening. We invite them to join us and hear what Albertans have to say about their plan.”
