Shane Getson, MLA for Lac St. Anne-Parkland, says it’s a great honour to be named Chief Government Whip in Premier Danielle Smith’s new UCP cabinet.
Premier Smith announced her cabinet appointments on June 9, and UCP caucus members were officially sworn in on June 20.
“A lot of folks don’t really know what the Whip position is, and it kind of gets defined by each administration,” says Getson. “It’s essentially the team quarterback when it comes to the caucus itself, making sure it runs efficient, making sure folks are where they need to be, and also a ton of team building.”
The 25 members of cabinet, which is a decrease from the previous 27, has been described by the party as a mix of experienced and new ministers who represent Alberta’s diversity.
As a team, the party adds, cabinet members are expected to govern for all Albertans and work to ensure Alberta realizes its full potential.
“We have a mix of new members and some older ones that were re-elected a few times,” Getson continues. “It’s really going to be a lot about mentoring and training, making sure folks understand their roles, responsibilities, and that they can engage where they can engage, making sure they are the absolute best representatives for their constituents as possible and making sure we are a highly effective team.”
In a release, the UCP says it’s cabinet’s goals include continuing to grow and diversify the economy, keeping life affordable, reforming the health care system, tackling crime, providing help for those struggling and defending Alberta’s interests.
Getson, and the rest of Alberta’s 87 MLAs, are scheduled to return to the Alberta Legislature on Oct. 30.
