Barrhead RCMP are investigating multiple break and enters into pipeline yards and a gas plant yard this month where hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage occurred, along with the theft of copper wire.
Between Feb. 4 and Feb. 11, 2023, Barrhead RCMP responded to four reports of break and enters into pipeline yards and a gas plant yard. Mounties say these break and enters caused significant damage, and it appears that the primary purpose was to steal copper wire. Police say these thefts caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and loss of wire.
On Feb. 22, 2023, at 2:50 a.m., Barrhead RCMP received a report of a break and enter and theft of copper wire in progress at a pipeline yard previously targeted. Barrhead RCMP responded and asked for assistance from neighbouring Parkland County RCMP. RCMP entered the yard and an officer placed a spike belt near the exit. A short time later, a suspect vehicle was observed leaving the yard and drove over the spike belt. Officers arrested a suspect.
Shortly thereafter, Mounties say a second vehicle was observed leaving the yard. Responding Parkland officers successfully spike belted that vehicle, however, it failed to stop. Officers followed the partially disabled vehicle until it came to a stop near Alberta Beach and two occupants were arrested.
Police say all three individuals remain in custody and RCMP continue to investigate all five occurrences.
“This ongoing investigation is a priority for our detachment, “ says Sgt. Bob Dodds of the Barrhead RCMP. “ Copper wire theft is a very serious issue in our community and we are pleased to have made these arrests.”
Additional updates will be provided once charges have been laid.
