The Town of Edson and Yellowhead County are charting a path forward on their new multi-use recreation facility.
The new recreation facility hit a major stumbling block back in April. Now, thanks to inflation, construction estimates have come in significantly higher than expected. According to municipal officials, the lowest bid on the project was 43 per cent over budget.
The two municipalities voted to literally go back to the drawing board, and come up with some form of facility that could still be built within the $70 million budget.
In a joint news release, the two municipalities share that they are looking at upgrading the existing Edson and District Leisure Centre. They share that, in June, they received six proposals from consultants on revamping the Edson and District Leisure Centre to see if it can meet the community’s needs. The project must also meet the requirements for the already approved federal funding.
Officials say the successful consultant will conduct a condition assessment for major building components, and complete a conceptual design and cost estimate. The updated plan is to be completed by December 2022.
In their joint statement, both municipal councils say they are continuing to meet and remain committed to ensuring a facility is developed for the community that meets the needs of the region.
