Woodlands County continues working to keep the region safe from wildfires.
The County recently announced that they have received a $60,000 grant from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta. The grant is to be used to cover the costs of the FireSmart program.
The County is planning to spend the money on creating a wildfire mitigation plan for the county, and a wildfire hazard and risk assessment plan for all of the county’s hamlets.
This is the first step in bringing in more FireSmart initiatives into the county. Once those two plans are completed, the County will be eligible for $200,000 in funding for more FireSmart fire prevention measures, such as removing trees and determining where to plant sprinklers.
Councillor Devin Williams extended his thanks to County administration for all their work in getting this project together.
“It is very important. The communities need this for protection,” said Williams.
FireSmart is a nationwide program designed to help communities protect themselves from wildfires.
