In the game of Monopoly, they called it a bank error in your favour. And for some residents of Woodlands County, it means a lower tax bill.
At Woodlands County’s June 8, 2022 meeting, Woodlands County council had to approve some adjustments to the budget when it was discovered that some incorrect numbers were used in some tax assessments.
As administration explained, they used the wrong number from the Barrhead & District Seniors Housing Association when calculating tax rates. Thanks to the mathematical formulas, this led to some incorrect linear tax rates in the area. The County office received numerous complaints tipping them off to the error. The incorrect tax notices that had been sent out were voided. Administration had now used the proper numbers and corrected tax notices were ready to be sent out, once council approved it.
The effect on the budget was $242,000 reduction in seniors’ requisitions.
Once the budget was amended, council then went about passing Bylaw 589/22, which corrected the tax rate.
County administration offered their apologies to County council for the error. Reeve John Burrows accepted the apology, noting that it was just a simple error that they were fixing.
