The Town of Edson is tying up the loose ends with 2021’s finances.
At the Town’s May 3 meeting, council voted to move 2021’s year-end surplus into their unrestricted surplus. The surplus is more than $920,000.
Traditionally, the Town tried to keep around $1 million in the unrestricted surplus, and around $500,000 in a tax stabilization fund. Both are used for contingency purposes.
Edson mayor Kevin Zahara applauded the move.
“Having an unrestricted surplus is always a good thing,” said Zahara. “This is a little bit larger than we are used to, but we will be able to utilize these funds for some of those unforeseeable circumstances.”
A new café proposed for Edson is heading to Edson town council to get the go-ahead.
At Edson town council’s May 3 meeting, council approved a development permit for a café at 4921 – 6 Avenue. The business owners are looking to increase the floor area by 40 per cent for use as an eating and drinking establishment, while maintaining the existing residential unit.
The property is currently zoned as Direct Control, which means Edson town council has final say on how the land is used.
Council was in agreement that a public hearing is a necessity in a situation like this.
Councillor Krystal Baier noted that, since it is Direct Control, Edson residents would not be able to voice concerns to the appeal board.
“It does give the public an opportunity to have any comments they wish to have on it,” said Baier.
The date of the public hearing is yet to be decided.
The Town of Edson is updating its Intermunicipal Development Plan with Yellowhead County.
At the Town’s May 3 meeting, town council passed Byalw 2276, which will update the plan. Yellowhead County has already made the same changes to their plan, and Edson is just adjusting theirs to match. Town administration referred to the changes as housekeeping edits.
With the first reading passed, the revisions do need to go to a public hearing. The public hearing has been set for Edson town council’s May 17 meeting.
