The Town of Edson is updating the way they assign street addresses.
At Edson town council’s Mar. 1 meeting, they passed Bylaw 2274. The bylaw governs the Town’s addressing system, and ensures the orderly assignment of street numbers and building numbers.
As administration pointed out, the previous bylaw was passed in 1987, and was no longer meeting the needs of modern developments. According to administration, it was leading to significant delays in new developments as developers sorted through it.
Councillor Krystal Baier noted the motion points out a few properties in Edson will have to change their address, and if administration had a count as to how many that would be.
Administration replied, there are not any that need changing currently. However, the new bylaw includes the mechanism for making changes, should an older address become an issue.
Councillor Gene Chouinard said this new law would work better if it targeted new developments. Administration pointed out, that is how the new bylaw was designed and that is completely its intent.
Councillor Ed Moore was curious about the developments of the past 35 years, and what the old bylaw might have been missing.
Administration shared that, in their research, they found several large gaps. The most notable absence was the addressing of multi-tenant developments. That was the most significant cause of delays to new developments, reported administration, so it has now been addressed.
Before the new bylaw passed, Mayor Kevin Zahara praised administration for their work on this project.
“I am happy to see just another way we are trying to make things easier to get development going in our community,” said Zahara.
