The Town of Edson is showing its support for the people of Ukraine.
At Edson town council’s Mar. 1 meeting, council voted to raise the flag of Ukraine over the Edson Civic Centre to show their solidarity.
Councillor Greg Pasychny made the motion, saying, “I think that Canada needs to show its support to a nation that has been invaded by dictators.”
Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara supported the motion, noting there are a lot of Edson residents of Ukrainian descent, but being just a municipality, there is little they can do.
“I cannot, for the life of me, understand why a sovereign nation, that has been peaceful, would be attacked when unprovoked. It has been really sad,” said Zahara.
Councillor Peter Taylor encouraged Edson residents to donate to the Canadian Red Cross. Zahara pointed out that, until Mar. 18, the federal government will be matching all donations to the Canadian Red Cross, up to a maximum of $10 million.
The motion passed unanimously. The flag was raised on Mar. 3.
Growing out of this discussion, council also directed administration to review the Town’s flag policy. According to administration, as they were reviewing the policy in preparation for this motion, they noticed a few things that could be tightened up.
