A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet, but a mayor and a reeve may be two different things.
At Woodland County council’s Feb. 16 meeting, council voted to change the title of their chief elected officer from “mayor” to “reeve.”
Reeve John Burrows was the one to lead the charge, pointing out that the County’s chief elected officer is not voted for by the residents at large, but chosen by the council from among their councillors. In such situations, Burrows pointed out, the title is traditionally “reeve.”
Councillor Peter Kulkien also identified with the change, saying it would help highlight Woodlands County’s status as a rural municipality.
The change passed unanimously.
Woodlands County is getting ready to expand Blue Ridge.
At council’s Feb. 16 meeting, a public hearing took place to collect public feedback on the Blue Ridge Estates Outline Plan.
The land around Blue Ridge is currently zoned as Reserve District, and the Outline Plan needs to be approved by council before rezoning can go ahead.
Once the Outline Plan is approved, the developer is hoping to rezone it to Country Residential, and then subdivide the lots.
The hearing was scheduled for Mar. 17, 2022 at 7 p.m. at Woodlands County’s offices in Whitecourt.
Woodlands County is gearing up for construction season.
At council’s Feb. 16 meeting, the tender was awarded for the Range Road 101 Creek Alignment.
The contract went to Strydhorst Enterprises, for a value of $83,895.
Councillor Dave Kusch made the motion. He noted the project needs to be done, as the creek is starting to wash out part of the road.
Councillor Bruce Prestidge applauded the selection, as Strydhorst Enterprises has done work for the County before.
The work will be carried out on Range Road 101 approximately 150 metres north of Township Road 572.
