Edson-area residents have the chance to enjoy some old-fashioned fun this weekend.
On Aug. 28, the Edson Country Fair takes place at RCMP Centennial Park. The fair is being held to celebrate the legendary Canadian bush pilot Wilfred “Wop” May. In 1919, May came to Edson to assist RCMP in the first aerial pursuit of a suspect.
Kathy Kushner, Travel Centre Coordinator for the Galloway Station Museum, says that one of the highlights of the fair is a tour of the Edson locations that May used in his journey through the community.
“We’re going to be having a guided wagon ride, which will take people to where he took off and where he landed,” says Kushner.
There will be lots of old-fashioned games for the kids as well, according to Kushner. “For example, there’s bag races, sack races, that kind of thing. For stationary games, there’s tug of war, and some other old-fashioned games.”
In addition, more ‘modern’ activities are also planned, such as a Titanic-themed inflatable.
Continuing the Country Fair theme, however, there will be an old-fashioned bench show. This is where local artists can submit some of their work to be judged.
Food trucks will also be on hand to serve tasty treats. Kushner notes five have signed up so far, coming from as far away as Hinton.
Tyler Babiuk will be providing live music.
The Edson County Fair starts at 2 p.m. and wraps up with fireworks at 10:45 p.m.
