The film Spearphishing is about to have its world premiere in Whitecourt. Edmonton filmmaker Tim McKort has been making the film in the Whitecourt and Woodlands County region for the past eighteen months. Like a lot of productions, McKort had to adjust to COVID regulations. “Filming outside really helped with social distancing,” said McKort.
Spearphising is the tale of a retired police officer and former military man who’s semi-retired and living a nice, secluded life. But, when some Russian villains move in to the area to begin their criminal activities, he’s forced to come out of retirement to protect the region.
But while working on the film, McKort really fell in love with the characters he created, and so he began developing a sequel. The sequel films this summer in the Drayton Valley and Brazeau County area. Some of the locations he’s already lined up include the Brazeau Dam and the Bear’s Paw Ranch. McKort says he’s also found the people of Drayton Valley and Brazeau County to be very welcoming. “They’ve had some issues with the oilpatch and COVID, and they were just really happy to have something dynamic like this come in and feature what they have and the beauty of the area,” said McKort.
The sequel to Spearphishing begins filming in Drayton Valley on July 9. Spearphishing will be having its world premiere at the Vista Theatre in Whitecourt on July 24.
