Residents of Yellowhead County are being allowed to return home this morning. The evacuation order for people in the path of the wildfire was lifted at 7PM on June 23. However, residents are to remain on evacuation alert, and prepared to evacuate again at a moment’s notice. In total, fifty residents were safely evacuated from the area.
The wildfire is still classified as out-of-control, and continues to burn just 9km west of Evansburg, north of Highway 16 and west of Highway 22. The fire has been determined to be around 180 hectares in size. Alberta Wildfire says some flames are still visible, but the fire seems to be mostly smouldering right now, and hasn’t grown much in size. They also emphasize that could change as the weather warms up throughout the day.
Alberta Wildfire and Yellowhead County continue to work together to battle the fire. Alberta Wildfire led the air attack, sending in six air tankers and seven helicopters. They also have thirty two firefighters on the ground, searching for and extinguishing hotspots. Yellowhead County has thirty one firefighters in the area, and they’re working on saving residential properties.
Yellowhead residents wanting more information can still call the county’s special information line, 1-833-334-4630.
