The Town of Mayerthorpe will soon have a Tim Horton’s.
The community will see the development of 4,500 square feet of new commercial retail space that will include a 2,500 square foot Tim Horton’s restaurant and drive-thru.
The remaining 2,000 square feet adjacent to the Tim Horton’s will be additional commercial retail space for one or two more businesses. The town says they have already received inquiries about the opportunity.
The new space is a project of Bedford Commercial Developments and will be located along Highway 22/50 Street beside the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) Petroleum Agency and Cardlock.
With highway visibility, new highway access, and future highway signage, the town anticipates the Tim Horton’s and additional retail space will bring additional new investment and employment to the town, create tourism opportunities, and increase demand for existing services.
Mayor Janet Jabush says the project has been a long time coming and they are thrilled to get it off the ground.
“I’m thrilled to see this exciting new investment in our town. It’s been a while since we’ve had a new commercial build. Thanks to very, very persistent efforts by our CAO, Alberta Transportation has agreed to the traffic flow design for the spot and all that, so there were a lot of hoops to jump through for this to be able to be pulled off.”
The total number of new full- and part-time jobs is unknown, but the Tim Horton’s is anticipated to be a busy, 7-day a week operation with extended hours.
Jabush says the Tim Horton’s will create jobs for local high school students and other residents, as well as add to the local economy and tourism opportunities by enticing travelers to stop in town.
“Along with the employment opportunities, the brand recognition that comes with Tim Horton’s should be a catalyst for growth,” adds Jabush. “And, the boost to the local economy from highway traffic and tourism is most welcome. Between the traffic lights and Tim Horton’s, people won’t just drive on by anymore.”
Jabush anticipates that the prime location for the development being located off two major highways will aid in bringing people into the community.
“They (the developers) target market is not the people who live in the Town of Mayerthorpe necessarily, not that people from the town aren’t going to go there, but their target is the 22,000 plus vehicles that go back and forth on Highway 43 and Highway 22 every single day.”
Jabush says groundbreaking on the development project will begin shortly and should be completed in roughly six months.
