A former Barrhead Composite High School shop teacher has been sentenced to one year in jail for sexually luring a 16-year-old student using Snapchat.
Andrew Jissink, 47, was handed the mandatory minimum one-year sentence, followed by two years of probation, on February 10 after pleading guilty in October 2019 to one count of child luring.
Jissink admitted that on January 1, 2017, after drinking at a New Year’s Eve party he sent two Snapchat messages to a female student at the school that contained pictures of himself along with sexual messages. The girl was not a student of his but they were known to each other through the school.
Jissink said he apologized to the girl the next day and does not remember the messages he sent, saying he must have been drunk. He denied having any intent for sexual relations with the girl.
After the incident became public, Jissink was suspended from Barrhead Composite High School without pay and then fired from the school in mid-2017 after a five-year teaching career.
During the investigation, three other female students admitted he had also communicated with them through Snapchat and Facebook.
In court, the judge said that Jissink, a married father of five, “reported being disgusted with himself and his behaviour leading to the offence” in a psychological assessment prior to sentencing.
Jissink was given until Tuesday, February 16 to turn himself in to begin serving his sentence.
